Today was the last day to submit an application for staged performance for the 2010 Wescott Street Cultural Fair. The Fair takes place on September 19, 2010 between noon-6:30 pm. I like attending. I played the fair back in 2005 with Midnight Mike. We were playing in Christiane Pagé's band. We received many positive comments. That's when I first started thinking about a Hondo Mesa / Midnight Mike band or duo. Mike and I later played at the Taste of Syracuse (picture below). We enlisted a couple fine musicians from the cool noir jazz band, 3rd & Main, to help us out. Again, we received many positive comments on our performance. I was sure that Hondo Mesa and Midnight Mike needed to start writing songs, recording and playing out. We talked to a management team and they took us in (I'll let them announce that one, when they are ready). Our manager put us in the studio to record a three-song demo CD. The video below shows us performing one of those originals, "Cowgirl Museum and BBQ." Thanks for reading, watching and listening. Long live independent music!

Here is how our manager describes us:

Hondo Mesa and Midnight Mike bring together a guitar and harmonica and follow that with raspy vocals for a taste of Americana, while feeling at home on the ranch or in the blues clubs of the Mississippi Delta. The duo began to flirt with this a long term project after their debut at the 2008 Taste of Syracuse. Both musicians come from strong roots in the Central New York music scene.

Midnight Mike Petroff is an energetic showman having been a part of the blues group Dirty Pool. Hondo Mesa has supported several bands in Central New York through his independent record label and now returns to the stage as an unsigned artist fronting the Americana influenced blues group. A lifelong musician in his own right, Hondo Mesa rekindled the fire to burn up the stage yet again.

Taylor Matt was an energetic teenager who had endured chemotherapy at age 12 and was entering her senior year at Cazenovia High School where she planned to carry on playing field lacrosse while studying hard for college and perhaps becoming a nurse like her mom Debra. She was also a role model for her younger sister Jessie and much admired student to her many friends.

Taylor's dad, Jeffrey, is a carpenter who coaches lacrosse, a game with deep roots within the Onondaga Nation. Jeffrey has played the game with his Onondaga relatives and took pride in Taylor's skills on a defense, a position which requires a high degree of proficiency with the stick and a willingness to get tough before the goal.

Taylor was diagnosed with Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML) one of several forms of the disease and unusual since it normally effects older people. It is marked by fatigue, swelling of the gums, anemia, bleeding, bruising and shallow, labored breathing. The white blood cells explode in number and consume the red, leaving the body prone to infections. Chemotherapy works in most cases, as it did for Taylor five years ago. The doctors were successful in restoring Taylor's health and were optimistic that after five years she would be liberated from the cancer.

Last August, while working at the New York State Fair, Taylor collapsed. When she was examined at the hospital the doctors found that the leukemia had returned. Since then Taylor has been in the Golisano Children's wing at the State University of New York Upstate Medical University in Syracuse,NY but now she must have a bone marrow donor is she is to survive.

There are over 7,000,000 people registered as bone marrow donors which, under normal circumstances, would be good news for Taylor since she is young and athletic. But Taylor comes from a family which has not only Onondaga but German and Irish roots which makes the donor process more complicated. She has been told she needs a Native American donor ( or one of mixed Caucasian-Native ancestry) exclusiveof her immediate family. Since less than 2% of all donors are Native the chances of locating that perfect match is difficult.

Natives have not had much success battling leukemia. Not only do most reservation dwelling Natives have limited access to health services but only 20% of those who need bone marrow transplants actually find a matching donor.

This is further qualified by the high rates of diabetes among most Natives since diabetics who take insulin are excluded from becoming donors as are those over 60 years of age or anyone who has had cancer, heart disease or HIV. Non-insulin taking diabetics, or those with pre-diabetes, may join.

This did not deter Taylor's family, friends and community from initiating bone marrow donor drives throughout the region. Clinics were held at Onondaga and Oneida territories in which hundreds signed up for the initial test which consists of four swabs of the inner cheek and, once the questionnaire has been completed, takes less than 10 minutes for the entire process.

Donor drives are planned for other Iroquois communities with the assistance of the Wiliam G. Pomeroy Foundation, a central New York organization whose president is a leukemia survivor. The Foundation has enlisted the help of Joanne Shenandoah, the GRAMMY winning Oneida performer, to spread the word through a series of radio and television commercials to be disseminated throughout the northeast.

Meanwhile, Taylor has been able to go home for short periods, to be with her high school class. She will not be playing with her club team for the Ethix league or wearing the Cazenovia High School uniform this season but as aggressive as she was on defense she will be with leukemia. She is grateful for those who have tested to become possible donors and is optimistic that somewhere in Native country there is the perfect match.

His Holiness the Dalai Lama turns 74 today.

This account of His Holiness' birth was taken from the official web site. His Holiness the Dalai Lama was born on 6 July 1935, and named Lhamo Thondup, to a poor family in the small village of Taktser in the province of Amdo. The name, Lhamo Thondup, literally means Wish-Fulfilling Goddess. Taktser (Roaring Tiger) was a small and poor settlement that stood on a hill overlooking a broad valley. Its pastures had not been settled or farmed for long, only grazed by nomads. The reason for this was the unpredictability of the weather in that area, His Holiness writes in his autobiography Freedom in Exile. During my early childhood, my family was one of twenty or so making a precarious living from the land there.

His Holiness' parents were small farmers who mostly grew barley, buckwheat and potatoes. His father was a man of medium height with a very quick temper. I remember pulling at his moustache once and being hit hard for my trouble, recalls His Holiness. Yet he was a kind man too and he never bore grudges. His Holiness recalls his mother as undoubtedly one of the kindest people I have ever known. She had a total of sixteen children, of whom seven lived. (Thank you for looking at me)

Mr. Sakamoto will be acknowledge and celebrated during the Echo Festival's celebration of UNEP's World Environment Day, Friday June 5, 2009.

Mr. Sakamoto's constant push towards sustainability is inspiring. The inspiration of nature in his music as well as his persistence in discovering new ways to release music and touring his music through sustainable and ecologically sound ways is remarkable. One of the nice surprises for me at Rolling Thunder this year was the presence of Robert Patrick. You know Robert. He's an actor who played T-1000 in 'Terminator 2: Judgement Day.' He is also in my favorite television show, "The Unit." He plays Col. Tom Ryan. Well, evidently he rides. He rides and supports the POW/MIA issue. He rode all the way from CA to attend Rolling Thunder in Washington DC. He had to have some 700 mile days. You the man Robert!

Hello All,

We are 30 miles from the fires - really a sad tale here with the death toll. It was so hot the other day one could not breath
outside. It was like being in the Sierra Nevada dessert - the air conditioning went and we had our windows
rolled down anyway - blowing in the hottest air ever. (not mention our brakes went after that!). 110 Degrees.
Anyhow the words "Global Warming" continually ring on the lips of everyone.

The weather now dropped about 40 degrees and it is much cooler. Doug and I took the train to the bay and
got to walk along the beach one morning. We have been meeting a lot of folks herein the city and it is
very multicultural. They gave us a beautiful 2 bedroom suite/apt overlooking the city and its really lovely with a kitchen
living room, washerdryer and dishwasher. Everyone is very welcoming and kind.

The aboriginees are very warm and rather wonderful. It took a while to find them, but the were sooo welcoming and
sang us songs and did a ceremony for us yesterday which was amazing. One of the elders
called "Uncle Reg" gave Doug a huge digereedoo and the women some music sticks. We ate out ranch which is
completely environmental oriented with wind, solar and organic gardens. Last night we had dinner along the Yarrow
river at the Director of the Parliament's home which was amazing scenery, with Parrots, magpies, cockatoo's and bats!

Our other Dakota and Navajo guests actually tried the kangaroo and crocodile..eee gads. They hang every where
in the markets and it's rather unnerving. The fruits and vegetables are plenty however, and absolutely beautiful!

Today we have a long planning meeting for the Parliament meeting of the Worlds Religions next December
and then we pack up and come home. It is Tuesday morning here and Monday for
you. We are just getting acclimated.

We look forward to debriefing -back in the states!

So it’s a day and two solid nights now since I left Lubbock, and the whole time I’ve been in the van.
Stopping only for gas and food, I sleep in the back. A few hours here and there, mostly at rest stops.

It’s restless sleep, dark and dreamless.

I wake feeling groggy, disoriented. Feelings I overcome with copious amounts of coffee, by pinching myself, by singing loudly along with the radio- what ever it takes.

I’ve passed through the flat lands of the North Texas pan handle, through the lonely red expanse of New Mexico, and up into the mountains and high desert of Arizona- and then,
right around midnight Friday: on into California.

There’s a check station at the border. Uniformed men with guns asking if I’ve brought any fruit, nuts or vegetable matter with me. One asks the questions, smiling, while another shines a flash light through my back windows, looking at what’s inside. I tell them I’ve got none of these things they’re looking for. They wave me forward.
As I pass through the gate I see a U-haul off to my right, parked on the shoulder of the road. It’s back door is open. Two men in civilian cloths are emptying it’s contents out onto the side of the highway, while two of the uniformed men watch. One of these holds a flash light, the other is cradling a shotgun.

I drive till 3 in the morning, pull off into a truck park and tuck myself in amongst the big rigs. The drivers leave them running all night to save on fuel, and the humming of their big diesel engines fills my ears as I fall to sleep.

Once again it’s a restless sleep,
dark and dreamless.

All day I’ve been taking the back roads across Texas: driving through a rolling ocean of grays and greens at seventy plus (the speed limit in most places). To my eyes it seemed a scrolling sea of dots flickering past,
glimpsed but not really seen.
All day I’ve been doing this and at last I’ve got as far as Lubbock, and I’m hoping to catch the second half of the game. Having little cash, Tom’s happens to be my only option, all the other places on the strip either have a steep cover or no television.
This is my reality, and presently it’s all about Tom’s.

The Indian Summer Music Awards seek to honor the best American Indian music that has been commercially released between the period of March 2, 2008 and March 1, 2009. The ISMA Awards will be presented during the Indian Summer Festival held September 11-13 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, with the award s ceremony on Saturday, September 12, 2009.

The Native American Music Awards nomination submissions can only be made by active and registered Advisory Board members. "The Nammys" Awards program is “devoted to bringing indigenous music to the world’s consciousness.” NY TIMES. Eligible recordings for Nomination consideration must have been released between January 1, 2008 thru January 31, 2009. Nomination submission forms & recordings must be mailed to the Awards office by March 31, 2009.

LaRive, founder of PK Productions, LLC, an indigenous music management and media company and Christopher Crosby of musicscreenPROductions. This video was a finalist for a 2007 Native American Music Award for Best Short Form Video.

Michael Bucher (pronounced Busher), a Cherokee singer-songwriter who was taught the stories, language and legends of his people, sings about the desecration of sacred sites, Cherokee legends and the sometimes seemingly Invisible Indian.

The long awaited new rockin' blues recording from the three bad boys of Sheridan Wyoming is here. As you can see by the cover, it has plenty of attitude!!!

Gary Small & The Coyote Bros. signed a deal with Hondo Mesa Records, an independent music label based in Syracuse, N.Y. The Native American band released their third studio album, I Don’t Play by the Rules, at the WYO Theater in Sheridan, WY, on Nov. 22, 2008.

Originally from Wyoming, Gary Small & The Coyote Bros. received the honor of “Best Rock Recording of the Year” at the 2007 Native American Music Awards (NAMMY’s). Their two previous albums have included Crazy Woman Mountain and Blues from the Coyote, and they have performed with music legends such as Chubby Checker.

Before forming the band, Gary Small had a successful solo career, where he collaborated with other Native American performers such as Rita Coolidge, Indigenous, Chrystal Gale, and Keith Secola. Small also won the “Songwriter of the Year” award at the 2002 NAMMY’s.

Gary Small & The Coyote Bros. is the third artist to sign with Hondo Mesa Records this year.

My MC Hammer Story

Back in 1990, I was attending grad. school in California. I had just left my job as Vice President of Decision Research Corp., a public opinion and political consulting firm headquartered in Cleveland, OH. To make some money while a student, I did a little political consulting. I spoke at a Campaign Management conference at UC Davis. There I met a captain of the Fremont, CA. Fire Dept who was the campaign mgr. for Fremont Mayor, Ben Ball. He hired me to do some voter targeting for the Mayor's re-election campaign.

So where does Hammer come in? MC Hammer, a resident of Fremont, was one of the Mayor's biggest supporters. The Fire Capt. mentioned to Hammer that I had a pretty good rap on my answering machine. I'm pretty sure Hammer called me and listened to the rap. He didn't say anything, but I would recognize that laugh anywhere. Hahaha. That's my MC Hammer story. As we all know, Hammer is too legit to quit!

Hot Springs, S.D. – Michael Bucher’s new short documentary music video, “Don’t Forget About Me” was filmed on location in Western South Dakota in association by 2007 & 2008 Native American Music Awards nominees (Best Short Form Music Video) Karla LaRive of PK Productions, LLC (South Dakota) and Christopher Crosby of musicseenPROductions (New York).

This is the third indigenous music video from PK Productions, LLC and features area re-enactors, Paula Tonemah and Krista Knapp. The music video was shot on location at the Black Hill Wild Horse Sanctuary’s petrogylph site, along with other regional locations including Pine Ridge Reservation in July 2008.

“The music video deals with the protection of Native burial grounds, Native grave sites and sacred sites. I try to tell people you wouldn’t want your grandmother’s grave dug up…nor do American Indian people. And, yet, it happens every day in Indian Country” says Michael Bucher.

Michael Bucher is a Cherokee singer-songwriter who was taught from the beginning of his memory the stories, language and legends of his people. His songs are intended to teach, heal and bring awareness to everyone who hears them. He sings about topics that are important to him and others in Indian Country. From the desecration of sacred sites, to Cherokee legends, to the sometimes seemingly Invisible Indian, there’s a passionate quality throughout. With strong vocals and heartfelt lyrics, his music is a blend of acoustic guitar, native and a contemporary drum, flute, shakers, rattles, bass and electric guitars, and cuts a swath through native folk, blues and rock.

Hondo Mesa Records recording artist, Corn-Bred, was on air in Europe last week. Two songs, "Boogie Woogie” and “Sittin’ here waiting" were played on WOS-blues. From the information page of WOS's website:

"WOS Blues is the bluesshow of RTV WOS (Westlandse Omroep Stichting) in the Netherlands. The program is broadcasted every wednesdayevening from 21.00 till 22.00 hrs (local time). The program is presented by Frits Krieg and can be received worldwide by internet."

Philippe Pascal tells me that this evening, Corn-Bred will be played again on the program “WOS-Blues.” We can listen to it using internet. Just tune in to http://www.wos.nl/ between 3PM and 4PM EST time, and press the "big button" in the middle of the page. (Saying “Luister online naar WOS Radio – Klik hier). Corn-Bred will be played at the end of the show.

Christiane Pagé and Redbone

Hondo Mesa Records recording artist, Christiane Pagé, was caught hanging with Redbone at the 10th Annual Native American Music Awards (NAMA). Redbone was inducted in the NAMA Hall of Fame that night. Redbone played two of their biggest hits for an appreciative (and dancing) crowd -- "The Witch Queen of New Orleans" and "Come and Get Your Love." The band included Robert Zapata on drums and Karl Carrasco on keyboards.

Last Weekend for "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom"

Tonight, tomorrow and Saturday is your last chance to catch the Syracuse Stage's production of Ma Rainey's Black Bottom. This is the first play of the 2008-2009 season. It's directed by Tim Bond. Where is the Hondo Mesa Records connection? Ah.... the music playing in the lobby is HMR's own 3rd & Main, the Syracuse based cool noir jazz band.

This 3rd & Main CD was reviewed by The Post-Standard music critic, Mark Bialczak in April 2007. Mark said, "3rd & Main puts out a very hip, all-original jazz sound...3rd & Main's cast of Gil Lopez on guitar and vocals, Chris Kneisel on guitar and effects, Mark Eich on bass and Ken Hart on drums weaves a cool effect throughout."

Standing Room Only

The Bara Jonson and Kh'Mi Sept. 25 show at Jazz Central was a huge success. Our friend (and Hondo Mesa Records recording artist) Larry Hoyt sent us a shot of the standing room only crowd... Both shows (7:00 and 9:00) attracted an overflow crowd. The bands and audience had a great time.

Bialczak Reviews Kh'Mi CD

Hello Music Lovers,
Mark Bialczak, music critic for The Post-Standard, says Kh'Mi had to "dig deep to follow up" their SAMMY winning last CD. The review of their new CD, "Medicine Show," was published today. Bialczak acknowledges the unique variety that is Kh'Mi, not fitting "neatly into rock, blues, folk or any other definitively labeled style." On Medicine Show, "they're still grooving, soulful and brimming with good cheer."

Last night I was talking to newly signed Hondo Mesa Records (HMR) recording artist, Bara Jonson. He brought to my attending the following music video of him playing in Munich SL. The SL stands for Second Life. Check out the video. The featured song, "Far and Away" will be the title track of his first release with HMR. And, check out the end of the video... too cool.
